North Carolina Dog Lovers Help Bury Breed Specific Bill in the Boneyard

We’ve all seen lots of stories lately of communities targeting specific breeds, typical Pit Bulls. However, one specific legislator in North Carolina wanted to take the whole bias to another level and require not only a permit, but a criminal background check as well. The bill, HB 956, entitled “An Act to Regulate the Ownership of Aggressive Dog Breeds” was sponsored by North Carolina Representative Rodney W. Moore, included the following:

– Mandatory criminal background check.

– Mandatory aggressive breed training.

– Mandatory notification to homeowner’s insurance policy holder.

– Mandatory permit to own an aggressive dog.

The legislation applied to Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Mastifs, Chows and Perro de Presa Canarios. Fortunately the legislation died a quick death in committee after an immediate uproar by dog lovers throughout the state. Representative Moore was surprised by the public reaction. I’ll bet you he isn’t smarter than a fifth grader!
