Happy first day of April 2013! It may be a great day to come up with a genius and outrageous prank to pull on your friends and family (April Fools!), but it’s also the first day of National Pet Month, a month of the year entirely dedicated to our furry, cuddly adorable pets. As we all know though, our furry, cuddly, adorable pets are a huge responsibility that must be taken seriously. In fact, it’s probably safe to say many pet owners consider their pets to be their four-legged children.
It’s no joke that there are tons and tons of animals across Houston, the state of Texas and the entire United States that don’t have a home and a family to love them every day. Unfortunately, the large homeless pet population is in many cases because of irresponsible pet ownership. Throughout the month of April, we’re going to talk about how you can be the most responsible pet owner you can possibly be. Plus, we will talk about why you should choose the adoption option over the buying option when you’re considering a new pet.
Let’s start with the top 10 reasons to choose the adoption option if you’re thinking about adding a new furry member to your family. Of course we could list hundreds of thousands of reasons to adopt a dog or cat, but we’ll stick with some of the top reasons for now:

BARC takes in up to 100 dogs and cats per day through much of the year, and each one of them has its own look and personality. Occasionally, BARC takes in a full-breed animal, but most of them are mixes. In many cases, they are mixes from several generations so they have a look entirely their own. And they’re so adorable!
