More than 200 dogs and cats will be available for adoption at the “Howliday Party,” which the San Antonio Area Foundation’s animal no-kill program, Talk About It!, is hosting Saturday, December 8, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at The Rim Shopping Center (La Cantera Pkwy and IH-10), in partnership with Iams Home 4 the Holidays. More than 50 vendors and animal welfare organizations will be on-site.
“We have finished the most successful year for live release ever in San Antonio,” said Gavin Nichols, who oversees the Area Foundation’s animal no-kill program. “We hope to help get fiscal year 2013 off to an even better start and continue to push live release from all of our shelters and rescue groups even higher.”
“Live release” is the term that applies to all adoptions, transfers to rescue and adoption groups and returns of lost pets to owners. In fiscal year 2012 (October 2011 through September 2012), the City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Services department reported live release of 19,750 dogs and cats. That was well over twice as many dogs and cats than in FY 2011. The ultimate goal is to release all healthy, treatable and adoptable dogs and cats that enter the shelter.
