Giving the gift of a loving pet is one of the best gifts, when properly planned, you can give. The SPCA of Texas is again hosting the SPCA Home for the Holidays Pet Adoption Center at NorthPark Nov. 23 – Dec. 23.
Seven years ago this month, as the first anniversary of my mom’s passing approached my friend – on her birthday – gave me the best gift ever, Shelby, my not so miniature (the picture says it all) Miniature Schnauzer. She belonged to a co-worker with health issues who no longer could care for her. We have been stuck like glue ever since.
Studies show that pets bring not only happy smiles and wagging tales but also, learning opportunities and health benefits. The responsibility of taking care of pets can not be taken likely but it can help teach children empathy and social skills. For older family members the companionship goes a long way toward relieving a sense of loneliness. Also, according to the Center for Disease Control it can help lower not only their blood pressure but cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well.
