As a noun, “shadow” is defined as, “an area that is not, or is only partially, illuminated.” As a verb “shadow” means “to shade.”
But at Rancho Coastal Humane Society, “shadow” means that you can adopt a cat or kitten of any color right now, pay the regular adoption fee, then also take home its “shadow” (a black cat or kitten) at no additional cost.
“There are two reasons why we have so many black cats and kittens right now,” said RCHS spokesman John Van Zante. “First, it just seems like we received a lot more black kittens this spring and summer. And second, a darker colored cat or kitten sitting in the back of its enclosure or partially hidden behind a that nice, fluffy blanket looks like a shadow. Families think the kitty pen is empty so they keep on going. We’re trying to change that. Right now we’re making it worth your while to be on the lookout for these ‘shadow’ cats.”
