As befits her gracious modesty, Betty Shaffer is a cuddler, especially of cats and dogs pretty much wherever she goes, and more so at the Midland Humane Coalition’s Enhanced Pet Adoption Center in quarters of Midland’s PetSmart store.

“He is a sweetheart,” the career nurse, retired but delightfully active along with her engineer-husband, Andy Shaffer, said of embraceable Buddy.

Buddy, an orphaned Chihuahua, wound up at the Midland Animal Services (MAS) shelter after his caretaker died. As circumstances allowed, the docile pet became a candidate for euthanasia at the MAS shelter or for adoption into what the Humane Coalition fondly calls a caring “forever home.”
