Humane Society: Pet adoption experience excels at shelters – savannahnow.com

he ASPCA has designated October as National Adopt-a-Shelter Dog month. Animal lovers everywhere are encouraged to spread the word to raise awareness about the positive aspects of adopting from shelters like ours.

Did you know that there are 3 million to 4 million dogs in shelters at any given time across the United States? Adopt-a-Shelter Dog month affords an opportunity to educate people about adoption as the best option when adding a dog to your family. Many shelter dogs are pure breeds, and, like HSGS dogs, have benefited from health and temperament testing, de-worming, basic vaccinations, flea and heartworm prevention, and microchips. While most shelters also provide assistance and referrals for affordable spaying and neutering, our dogs are already “fixed” at the time of adoption.

Studies show that adopting from a shelter is a better experience than buying from pet stores, flea markets, backyard breeders or puppy mills. In fact, buying from many pet stores is buying from puppy mills, enabling them to survive and perpetuate their inhumane practices.
