Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation
Dear AVRAL members,
We face a crisis of such magnitude it's hard to comprehend. The number of animals who will procreate in our state due to the closure of the 4 low-cost spay/neuter clinics is mind boggling. The consequences of the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiner's (ASBVME) “ruling” on October 10 will make all of the pet overpopulation problems in Alabama significantly worse. Many people have written to AVRAL wanting to know what they can do to register their opposition to the Board's plan to enact severe rules on low-cost spay/neuter clinics that would effectively put clinics out of business. We'd like to see each and every one of you on October 10, by 9am, at Commerce Street. The State Vet Board, and the state of Alabama, needs to see that we are not apathetic about animal welfare. So, be sure to mark your calendars for October 10. Right now, we must take steps to register our opposition. Here's how!
WRITE THE ASBVME AND TELL THEM YOU OPPOSE THE CLOSING OF THE LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER CLINICS. Send a copy of your letter to Mark Nelson of the Irondale Spay/Neuter clinic so he can have your letters on file. We don't want the ASBVME claiming “nobody wrote.” The ASBVME is required to make all correspondence, be it written or oral, part of their decision-making process.
THERE ARE OVER 6,000 AVRAL MEMBERS. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU NEEDS TO WRITE A LETTER. THIS IS CRITICAL. You do not have to possess the writing talents of Shakespeare. Write one or two sentences or write a page worth of commentary, just get a letter opposing the new rules in THIS WEEK. Opposition has to be NOTED by the ASBVME. HERE ARE THE DETAILS:
The State Vet Board must consider fully all written and oral submissions from interested persons about the proposed rules. Irondale clinic director Mark Nelson states that people should “…exercise their right to make their comments to the Board about why these proposed rules are a bad idea and not in the interest of animal welfare.”
All comments should be sent as follows:
Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners
c/o: Tammy Wallace
8 Commerce Street; Suite 910
Montgomery, AL. 36130-5330
Send a copy to Mark Nelson as well, in case the ASBVME wants to argue they didn't receive the letters.
2721 Crestwood Blvd.
Irondale, AL 35210
We have no time to lose. In a few days I'll send info on how to best reach our next person of interest, Governor Bentley. But you need to get your letter, however brief, to the ASBVME and a copy of it to Mark Nelson.
Please act now. Your letters don't have to be works of art. Just state you oppose the new rules the ASBVME is planning to enact in their vote on Oct. 10. Or, spice it up and let them know what horrible effects their “rule” will have on animal overpopulation in Alabama.
Let's move on this quickly,
Rhonda Parker, State Chair, AVRAL
