The Cat Adoption Team (a local nonprofit animal shelter in Sherwood, Ore) recently honored its top volunteers.
CAT relies heavily on cat-loving volunteers who assist the organization in every aspect of operations. Cuddling and loving on the cats, fostering kittens, cleaning an endless number of litter boxes, counseling new adopters, folding and stuffing envelopes, and the list goes on. They are 463 people strong and provide the work of 30 full-time equivalent employees.
The following rose to the top this year:
Volunteer of the Year: Barbara Pirk (McMinnville – formerly of Sherwood [just moved])
Most people believe Barbara is a CAT staffer! Barbara started volunteering for CAT in 2007 and has already accumulated over 6,000 hours (1,200 a year). She is an outstanding foster care volunteer, opening her home and heart to dozens and dozens of kittens. Barbara is the busy volunteer assistant for the foster care program and the operations manager. Crafty, she creates the annual CATnip 5k’s unique ribbons and awards for participants.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Ray Zak (Beaverton)
Ray is CAT’s official “handy man.” If it requires fixing, he’s our man. Once a week, Ray comes to CAT with tool kit in tow. His “honey-do” list is always long. Ray will be celebrating his 10th year of volunteering for CAT this year.
Volunteer Choice Award (peer award): Angie Britton (Aloha)
For over six years, CAT has enjoyed the talents and energy of Angie. She is the volunteer coordinator of one of CAT’s busiest offsite adoption centers (inside the Tanasbourne PetSmart). Angie is a master at getting CAT involved and engaged in small community events. She also sews comfy bedding for the shelter cats to enjoy while here. We appreciate her creativity and enthusiasm.
