Organizers hope an upcoming fundraiser for a Chillicothe cat rescue group can help find a solution to the city's stray cat population.
Purr…fect Companions Cat Adoption Center will host its first Stray Cat Strut on Sept. 22 with the intention of making it an annual event to raise funds for the cat rescue agency.
The center has been operating for about five years, mostly through financing by its founder, Shirley Ratcliff. However, as the operation has grown and Ratcliff began getting more and more calls about stray cats, she brought in her sister, Leona Bobo, to manage the shelter. Over the past year, Ratcliff has focused on raising money and awareness of the increasing cat population with local officials.
Ratcliff had been waiting for Chillicothe Mayor Jack Everson to take office before going to the city with more than a thousand signatures from area residents asking to form a committee to develop some kind of plan. In July, Ratcliff addressed the mayor and council's safety services committee about her concerns and ideas.
