The Humane Society of St. Lucie County is extremely grateful to those in the community who work with the shelter hand-in-hand in a variety of ways, all for the purpose of finding fur’ever homes for animals. That gratitude is extended in a special way to Petco, located in St. Lucie West, for its on-going efforts to help the HSSLC’s cats and dogs find a family to love.
For close to four years, the St. Lucie West Petco has opened its doors to allow the HSSLC’s pets into the store. Seven days a week, Petco’s customers can see for themselves many of the HSSLC’s animals who are ready to be adopted. As a direct result of this partnership, more than 3,000 pets have found fur’ever homes simply due to their visibility at Petco.
This incredible statistic alone is worth shouting about. But Petco doesn’t stop there. On a regular basis, they hold events and fundraisers in their store, the proceeds of which benefit the HSSLC. At different times throughout the year, for example, they ask customers who purchase items from their store to “round up” to the nearest dollar the cost of that item, donating the difference to the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.
“We have received thousands of dollars in donations for the shelter as a result of Petco’s efforts,” said David Robertson, director of operations for the HSSLC. “We cannot thank them enough for all they do.”
Petco has also permitted the presence of the HSSLC’s Mobile Adoption Unit in its parking lot at least once a month. The large RV carries from the shelter cats and dogs available for adoption. The exposure to the community of these beautiful creatures in this way has helped contribute to the high adoption rate through Petco’s partnership.
