WHAT: Who says an old dog can’t learn new tricks? Senior dogs make great companions for a number of reasons. Senior dogs tend to have a calm and easygoing temperament, are already trained in obedience and household manners and have been socialized, making them comfortable around people and pets alike. Something else to consider is that, contrary to what some may think, most older pets are not surrendered to animal shelters or rescue groups due to behavioral issues or because they are not ideal companions. Some common reasons senior pets are surrounded could be changes in work schedule, moving, the death of an owner or a divorce.
To help the 5-7 million companion animals that enter shelters every year find homes, every Petco™ store nationwide will host pet adoption events the weekend of June 9-10, 2012, and hopes to put the spotlight on senior dogs in need of loving, forever homes. Petco works with and supports approximately 7,000 local animal welfare groups across the country to help find homes for more than 200,000 adoptable animals every year. Hill’s Science Diet ® will be sponsoring the weekend by offering adopting pet parents a free can of wet dog or cat food, in addition to a free small bag of any Science Diet dry dog or cat food up to $14. The events will provide animal lovers across the nation the chance to meet many adoptable animals, learn about their local animal adoption groups and personally experience Petco’s Think Adoption First program.
