The first kitten has gone to her forever home from Doña Ana County’s new off-site kitten condo adoption center, followed by three more this week.
The kittens were all part of the same litter that came to the Doña Ana County Government Center’s new kitty condo, created through an initiative of the Doña Ana County Coalition for Pets and People and endorsed by the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners.
Steve Meadows, who works in the Planning Department at Doña Ana County, took home a gray tabby he named Emmy Lou.
“The adoption site is a great idea,” said Meadows. “It made the process easy and very accessible, and it’s certainly receiving a lot of attention here at the Government Center.”
The kitty condo helps facilitate more adoptions from the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley, which will further reduce the euthanasia rate for healthy, adoptable animals in Doña Ana County.
Visitors to the Government Center, located at 845 N. Motel Blvd., can see any of the kittens on display during normal business hours. Adoption applications are available at the front desk, and the fee to adopt a kitten is $50. The adoption fee includes a microchip, a spay/neuter operation, a state-mandated rabies vaccination and a one-year pet license for City of Las Cruces residents.
