Local shelters filled with pets in need of homes – Aiken Standard

There is quite a selection of pets available for adoption right now at the Aiken County Animal Shelter and at the Aiken SPCA because they have taken in so many animals in the past several months.

Last Tuesday alone, one person surrendered 24 puppies and two adult, female dogs to the County shelter, said Aiken County Animal Control chief enforcement officer Bobby Arthurs.

The shelter has consistently taken in approximately 320 animals per month since January. In April, 101 animals were adopted out, and 31 transferred to no-kill shelters up north, but the reality is that more animals go into the shelter than are adopted out.

“The shelter is overcrowded. We are overwhelmed, inundated with animals. I can tell the month of May is going to be high” with the number of animals surrendered or captured, he said.

Animal Control has been able to secure three foster homes for cats and kittens, but it’s not nearly enough.
