Sandy Gerard took a trip with her three kids to a special spot in Jacksonville Saturday and happily walked away with a fourth.
And she was not alone.
Scores of people took home new boys and girls Friday and Saturday and will have the chance to do so again Sunday as part of the Mega Match Adoption Event sponsored by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal and PetSmart Charities.
The three-day goal of 250 pet adoptions at three Jacksonville shelters was close to being met by day’s end Saturday as 231 dogs and cats, ranging from puppies and kittens to older pets, were adopted by people from Jacksonville to as far away as Putnam County.
Adoptions were being held at Jacksonville Animal Care & Protective Services, 2020 Forest St.; the Jacksonville Humane Society, 8464 Beach Blvd; and the First Coast No More Homeless Pets adoption center at 10503 San Jose Blvd. The event continues from noon to 5 p.m. today.
