Program to help older adults adopt pets – The Newton Kansan

A pilot program is underway to improve the quality of life for older adults and increase the number of pet adoptions in Harvey County.

“This is the only place this is happening,” said Dr. Mary Carman of Prairie View.

The newly created Older Adult Pet Adoption Program provides support to older adults who want to adopt a pet.

The support comes in the form of volunteers who can help care for the pet when the adult is unable to do so, help find a new home the pet if needed and support to the adult after the adoption.

The program is a joint effort between Prairie View, Caring Hands Humane Society, Harvey County Department on Aging and the Wichita State University Regional Institute on Aging.
