Humane Society for Southwest Washington aims for 200 adoptions during Saturday event – OregonLive.com

No plans for spring break this week? Perhaps now would be a good time to prepare for a new pet.

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is hoping to find homes for at least 200 pets this Saturday in a first-ever “March Madness 12-Hour Adoption Extravaganza.”

The shelter will offer the event, which will take place from noon to midnight on March 31, after being awarded a $10,000 grant from the ASPCA.

The HSSW is the only open-admissions shelter in southwest Washington and can accommodate up to 220 adoptable animals at any given time.

But while it typically adopts out 12 to 15 pets in an average day, shelter staff members hope on Saturday to clear out most of the kennels to make way for the onslaught of the upcoming kitten season.

Usually occurring between May and September, “kitten season” is the time period during which area shelters are flooded with felines.
