There are many reasons why dogs and cats are given up by families, but one of the saddest is when the owner dies and the remaining family members can’t or won’t keep the pet.
Even more heartbreaking is when the pet is older and confused about where its beloved owner has gone. Older pets face a dismal chance of adoption at most shelters, and they have, to put it mildly, a difficult time adjusting to a strange, crowded, noisy cement run or metal cage.
I received this email from one of the vets I work with, and she is helping find a new home for a sweet, older miniature poodle who finds himself possibly homeless due to a death in the family. Sammy can be a wonderful pet for an older person who needs companionship and love, just like this darling dog!
His owner’s family can not take him due to allergies, and they are desperately looking for a good home for him.
If you know anyone who might be interested, have them contact Kristin Hocevar (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Ginger (email@example.com). They are both coordinating the search.
