Gimme Shelter: Treating animals with kindness, respect and compassion – Bullet News Niagara

At Niagara Falls Humane Society every animal is treated with kindness, respect and compassion. The shelter is a safe refuge and temporary home for homeless pets. We believe that every animal deserves to be loved and properly cared for. When you adopt a shelter animal or support the shelter, you are helping us to create a more humane world for the animals in our community.

I’m sitting in my office writing this column with the sweetest wee dog in my lap (a lovely perk of the job). He is a tiny fellow, not even three years old. He came to us from another shelter, having been surrendered by his family. He is a scared, lonely little guy with a history of some biting. He was pretty edgy and defensive when he first got here, but with some gentle treatment and one to one attention, he quickly turned into a complete cuddlebug.

All he wants today is my warm lap and quiet safe office to snooze in. I’m grateful to him today for slowing my world down a bit while I focus on him, and for reminding me why we do what we do at the shelter.
