New love: A Valentine’s tail – San Antonio Express-News

Darla should have found new love by now.

A shiny black basset hound mix with the mug of a Labrador retriever and a streak of white down her chest, Darla first found herself on the steps of Animal Care Services in early October, along with a young spaniel mix named Buddy.

Unlike most four-legged hardship cases that end up in ACS kennels, Darla and Buddy weren’t strays. Their owner died.

“And dogs mourn, too,” says ACS public information officer Lisa Norwood. “And that’s what’s really sad.”

Even sadder: Buddy found a new home, while Darla remains in foster care even after attending three large-scale adoption events.

That’s why we decided to help Darla find a special Valentine — in a new, loving, permanent home.
