At 4 p.m. Friday, the Blue Mountain Humane Society processed its 1,000th pet adoption of 2011, reaching a longed for goal of having a comma in their annual adoption statistics. The previous record for pet adoptions in a year at BMHS was 816 in 2010.
Kari Calaway and her children, Ian, Nia Ava and Evan visited the shelter with the goal of adopting a cat for Christmas. Instead, the family chose to adopt three cats: “Noel,” a 6-month-old female; Benny, a 1-year-old female; and Ivy, a 6-month-old female. Ivy had the distinction of being the 1,000th adoption. Staff and volunteers joined in the celebration as they gave the family gifts of food, litter and treats. All adoption fees for the cats were waived, but the Calaway family insisted on making a generous cash donation.
