It is not recommended to give animals as Christmas gifts. Shelters across B.C. often see a huge increase in January and February from people bringing in pets of all shapes and sizes that they may have received as gifts and don’t want, or bought on a whim and realized they can’t care for them.
However, for people who have assessed their living situation and would like a pet to help them welcome the holidays this year, the BC SPCA has hundreds that need homes.
“The SPCA strongly discourages giving pets as gifts,” said Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA. “But if an individual or family has carefully considered their decision and the responsibility of a new pet, the holidays can be an optimum time to adopt.”
