Cat Adoption Story: Gracie and the Brandts – Knoxville News Sentinel

It’s hard to believe that the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is almost upon us. It will also mark almost 10 years since my husband Dave and I rescued our cat, Gracie, from I-40 East.

My husband and I were on our way to attend a 9/11 memorial for firefighters. It was raining lightly that morning, and the the traffic was heavy and moving slowly when I first saw her out the passenger window. We were in the fast lane and I couldn’t believe my eyes—a tiny kitten was in the center of the lane next to us.

As we passed her, I looked back to see a car just miss her. I called out to my husband who was driving because I feared the next car would hit her. My husband was able to stop safely, and I threw my door open and waved my arms frantically as I ran back to grab her.
