For Melissa St. Pierre and oneand-half-year-old Lucy, it was love at first sight.
“She soooo cute,” said St. Pierre as she lovingly refers to her recently adopted “kitty.”
“It is a big commitment,” said St. Pierre, a psychology graduate student at the University of Windsor. “It’s also a financial commitment.”
But more and more local animal lovers are prepared to make that commitment thanks to an improving economy as well as a $2.5-million renovation to the Essex County Human Society, said Melanie Coulter, society executive director.
“People are more willing to take on an animal than they might have been last year, and maybe are a little more confident in their job situation,” she said.
