“We want the sanctuary to be the Black Hills’ sanctuary, not just Spearfish,” Fred Erdman said recently in Belle Fourche as volunteer staff members offered information on the Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.
Erdman is from Rapid City and is chairman of the nonprofit sanctuary’s board. “There are thousands of people in the Black Hills who don’t know where it is,” he said. The sanctuary has been on 200 acres south of Spearfish on the Tinton Road since 1999. Belle Fourche has seen a few of its animals during the Christmas season at the United Methodist Church’s annual living nativity scenes.
