A new state-of-the-art animal shelter and pet adoption center will be opening soon here.
The Helmetta Regional Animal Shelter on Main Street is slated to open officially for business May 2. The facility is expected to lodge and adopt out animals for several area towns and raise additional revenue for the borough. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for May 7.
“This is something that we felt was in need in Middlesex County, and possibly even Monmouth and Mercer counties,” Mayor Nancy Martin said. “We have shared-service agreements with some municipalities for animal control, and we’re hoping once we open the doors, other municipalities will come on board. We see this as a revenue generator for our municipality, while providing a benefit to other municipalities.
