Kris Bachert can’t help picturing the dogs in shackles and orange jumpsuits. Traditional animal shelters remain an unfortunate necessity but she hates thinking of frightened dogs dragged in on a leash to a chorus of barking. She’s seen too many chain-link doors closing dogs into the tiny room where, if nobody adopts them, they’ll spend the rest of their days.
“Why should they spend their life in jail when they’ve done nothing wrong?” Bachert asked. “That breaks my heart whenever I think about it.”
