In the opening scenes of The Godfather, Marlon Brando holds a very mellow torbie cat while dispensing favours as a mafia don. The kitty wasn’t part of the cast, though. It seems that Brando found the stray in the back lot where the movie was being filmed, took a liking to it, so worked an appearance into the script.
It is rumoured that the cat was so happy at having found a friend, its purring drowned out some of Brando’s dialogue, and as a result, most of his lines had to be dubbed in later. There is also a wonderful old photo online, of Brando relaxing at home, with a white cat draped happily across his shoulders while he types-a sort of fifties version of the modern keyboard cat:
