At the San Francisco SPCA, one cat’s paws clung to the window like suction cups, while another bounced around doing crazy kitty antics. In the “get acquainted” room, the two tabbies rubbed heads like long-lost brothers. What could Lau Hodges do but adopt them both? Her friend, Alice Torres, shares the little family’s tale of love, loss and never losing hope.
Zapo and Juanito did everything together. The cats ate, drank and even used the litter box at the same time. They patrolled the neighborhoods, crossing yards, alleys, grocery stores, empty lots. Where you saw one, you saw the other, hunting mice, spiders and other crawly things. At night, Lau told me the two cuddled up with her like bookends.
