Galloway Township woman makes caring for stray cats her crusade (New Jersey)

Lucia Van Pelt, 61, of Galloway Township, has been rescuing cats and kittens through her nonprofit Hi Arbor CARES (Cat Adoption Rescue Education and Shelter) for about five years. Before that, she helped the Mays Landing-based nonprofit LICKS (Life Improvement for Cats and Kittens). She works in computer security at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township.

Question: What does your organization do?

Answer: I do cat and kitten rescue and adoption. You can see some of my cats in the Animal House, a pet supply and grooming store, on Route 30 in Absecon. I have a cage there, and it has been very successful in placing cats. No cat is adopted out without being spayed or neutered, vaccinated and tested. It costs about $100 per animal. I use the Humane Society (veterinary service), which gives me a discount. I couldn’t do it without donations.
