It was a busy Saturday afternoon at the Wesley Chapel PetSmart where the Animal Friends Society was holding a dog adoption.
Volunteer Valerie Vandiver encouraged an interested customer to check out the Chihuahuas when she noticed one was missing from the pen.
It was Tanner — a 14-month-old, 5.4-pound dog who is skittish and not comfortable with strangers.
The volunteers searched but couldn’t find him. They contacted the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and filed a police report because they believe Tanner was stolen.
“We don’t know why they’d do it,” Vandiver said. “We hope only good thoughts — that they didn’t take it to sell it.”
