Hard-luck dogs get second chance in Canada

On Friday these hard-luck pooches and 33 other small dogs housed at Riverside’s Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center boarded a private jet to Canada where eager dog lovers are waiting to adopt them.

The “Freedom Flight,” as it is called, is a collaboration between the Humane Society in Edmonton, Canada; Jan Folk, a businesswoman who splits her time between Edmonton and Huntington Beach; and California shelters and rescues.

Small dogs, 10 pounds and under, that have languished in crowded California facilities for months are flown to Edmonton in a Gulfstream III jet provided by Folk. Once in Canada, they are turned over to the Edmonton Humane Society to be put up for adoption.
