Middle-school pet project: Helping animals

One visit to the Sayreville Pet Adoption Center for Allee Errico, now an eighth-grader at South River Middle School, and she just had to do something.

“I was looking at the dogs and I just wanted to help,” she said.

Errico, along with her friends and classmates Morgan Santoro and Meghan Moore, formed Kids Everywhere Protecting Animals (KEPA) to raise funds and gather materials for local animal shelters, including the Sayreville shelter and the Animal Rescue Force, based in East Brunswick.

Three years later, KEPA has grown to 10 members, including Ashley Kowalski, who serves as the group’s president, Hannah Nale, Aliza Signor, Olga Latosh, Paola DeCarvalho, Lexi Busco and Leah Herrmann. All are eighth-graders at South River Middle, except Busco, who attends the GraceM. Breckwedel School in Jamesburg. New members are always welcome.
