This month, the founding organization of Butte Humane Society is 100 years old. Started by a handful of people Jan. 3, 1911, the mission of one of Chico’s oldest nonprofits was to shelter homeless animals.
“We’ve come a long way, and we have a long way to go, too,” said Lori Wells, communication and outreach associate for the shelter.
Too many homeless animals, limited funding, and a deteriorating shelter on Fair Street have been persistent problems for Butte Humane Society. Wells shared her thoughts Tuesday at the shelter’s new Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic at the Cat Adoption Center, 587 County Drive.
