In typical Black Friday fashion, the customers lined up outside the gate waiting for it to open. But these weren’t shoppers looking for deals on flat screen TVs. They were looking for something soft and fuzzy, preferably with puppy breath.
It was the SPCA Suncoast shelter’s annual Black Friday pet adoption event, and puppies were the deal of the day. Like any retail merchant, the SPCA stocked up on inventory – rescuing black dogs and puppies from shelters in five different counties – and offered special deals. The regular $125 adoption fees were reduced to $75 for any dog whose coat was at least half black or brindle. Most shelters have trouble adopting black dogs, operations manager Devilyn Saunders said.
