Pit bull advocacy, dog adoption discounts and haunted fundraisers: Animals in the News

While Ohio law labels all pit bulls “vicious” and some cities have banned them, scores of pit bull advocates in Northeast Ohio say: “Don’t believe the bull. Adopt a pit.”

The Humane Society of Greater Akron and For the Love of Pits in Lake County are offering pits for adoption at two events Saturday.

The humane society hosts an adoptathon from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at 7996 Darrow Road in Twinsburg Township in celebration of National Pit Bull Awareness Day.

“Our goal is to highlight some of our successful pit bull adoption stories and educate people about the breed,” said Kristin Branagan, the shelter’s director of animal behavior.

A seminar, “Fact vs. Fiction: Busting the Myths of Pit Bulls,” begins at noon, followed by refreshments and shelter tours.
