Our Government’s Opposition Makes for Ruff Going For RPV’s Annenberg Pet Center

Despite a very thorough environmental impact report that answered questions like “Will dog barking affect wildlife?” the Annenberg Foundation’s $40 million pet education center is having trouble with the Rancho Palos Verdes Planning Commission.

According to the Daily Breeze, the majority of commissioners said at a Tuesday night meeting that they don’t believes the project is consistent with the city’s General Plan, which calls for “recreational passive use” for the area, and not an “animal-themed education center.” Complicating things is the National Park Service, which is now speaking out against the project, saying it’s “an inappropriate use of former military land.” Excerpt from the Breeze: “‘We do not deny that pet adoption and education regarding our relationship with domestic animals are important social needs,’ wrote David Siegenthaler of the park service’s Pacific West Regional Office in Oakland in an Oct. 8 letter to the city.
