Indigo Rescue is the last, best chance for many animals

Rain clouds hang low over a narrow valley near Vernonia. The Nehalem River gurgles behind the property, a 16-acre former horse ranch.

Heather Hines walks through the grass in one of the three corrals at Indigo Ranch. A motley assortment of dogs follows her every move.

There’s Diesel, a lanky Great Dane who’s a little nervous about the strange canines surrounding him. Flynn, a stout Australian shepherd. A few happy-go-lucky Labradors. And Zero and Uno, who are named after the number of eyeballs they have left: none and one, respectively.
