Villagers open their homes and their hearts to animals who need to be adopted

Since Barbara Irwin started Pet Lovers Rescue in The Villages six years ago, she estimates 2,300 cats and 150 dogs have found permanent, loving homes.

Irwin volunteers her time — and often her money — to run the nonprofit organization, coordinating pets with foster homes, interviewing people interested in adoptions and making sure each animal is spayed or neutered and has up-to-date shots and records.

Petco Animal Supplies in Rolling Acres Plaza provides space for several cats inside the store, so customers can see the animals and talk to volunteers about them.
