Asheville Humane Society’s New Center Opens

Cissy Denby remembers what the Lee’s Creek Road animal shelter looked like from her childhood growing up in the area during the 1950s and ’60s.

“It was depressing in 1958,” said Denby, a Senior Services Corp. employee who works at the adoption center 20 hours a week. “It didn’t improve with age. … The love of the people doing the work was obvious, but the condition of the place is like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’”

Humane Society’s just-completed pet adoption center, which opened for business Tuesday.

There is still some work left to get through before the adoption center’s official opening celebration. It’s mostly cosmetic, the “final touches” phase, but it will all get done before the grand opening at 11 a.m. next Tuesday.
