Anyone who has a love for animals and volunteering then A New Dawn Pet Adoption is the place to be.

A New Dawn is looking for dependable, dedicated, animal loving people who would like to spend a couple of hours a week taking care of cats and dogs while they wait to find their permanent home.

This facility was founded by Dawn Kubisz, and just like the volunteers, she receives no salary for her work. It exists by donations including monetary, food and supplies. This is a cageless facility with every dog having their own room with bed, toys, food, water and a picket fence for a door. Cats are housed in a large cattery room with their necessities. All of the animals are exercised daily and able to socialize with other animals along with the volunteers. None of the animals at A New Dawn will be euthanized and will remain in the facility until they are adopted.

They would like to have enough volunteers to be able to split the shifts. Right now they have shifts from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. A crew is needed for Sunday to help clean and feed the animals while the shelter is closed.

Duties for volunteers include cleaning up rooms, feeding the animals, take them on walks, etc. Additional opportunities include special events on Saturday such as pet adoption days at PetSmart and Petco in Pasadena.

Volunteers need to be 18 and older, however, anyone under 18 may still volunteer with a parent present.

A successful pet adoption largely depends on the behavior of the dog once it is in its new home. For that reason, the Burleson Animal Shelter is joining with the Association of Pet Dog Trainers to promote January as Train Your Dog Month. January is Train Your Dog Month because so many dogs and puppies are adopted or purchased from breeders and brought home during the winter holidays.

The goal is to promote using training methods that are kind, gentle and have an emphasis on building a relationship with your dog. In 2011, the Burleson Animal Shelter adopted out 415 dogs. Of that number, 66 were returned. The most prevalent reasons were unrealistic expectations, the owner was moving, behavior issues, the dog was too active, family was allergic to the pet and the dog was destructive outside.

Train Your Dog Month focuses on promoting the importance of training and socialization to provide a safe, happy and positive relationship with canines.

Remember when your mother told you not to play in the street? Unfortunately this 6-month-old male kitty must not have listened to his mother because that is exactly where we found him; playing on a busy street in Old Town Spring!

Luckily one of our the volunteers from Clipped Ear Cat Sanctuary rescued this little boy from what could have been a disastrous ending. We named him Owen and what a great guy he is! Not only is Owen very handsome, with his gorgeous white and orange fur and big, beautiful golden eyes, but he is so very friendly. Owen will amuse you with his playful antics and charming personality. Life according to Owen is sunny side up all the way! If you are wanting to add lots of fun (along with lots of love too) to your life, than consider adopting Owen and join his world of funky kitty comedy. Owen is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, on flea treatment and combo tested negative. If you think Owen would be the perfect addition to your loving family, you can meet him in person by visiting his temporary home: Angle’s Pet Hospital located at 24734 Kuykendahl Road, Tomball, TX 77375. Make sure that you mention to Kim (281) 290-0360 that Clipped Ear sent you. Owen’s adoption fee is only $95 which means you get a great, healthy cat that has already received $300 worth of vetting, and more than ready to join his forever family! Thank you for considering a rescue cat. Don’t forget that Spay/Houston’s MASH unit to Trap/Neuter/Return free roaming cats is still in this area. If you know of an established feral cat colony, please contact DEANA SELLENS at desellens@adoptacattexas.org or call her at (281) 260-0015.

CCPAL kicks off the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 7, with its first visit of 2012 to the Market Place in Old Town Helotes for the Frontier Days Celebration. This fun-filled, family-oriented event features dozens of vendors selling everything from hand-made wooden benches, stools, and signs to antiques and home-made jams and preserves. Some vendors are regulars, others are seasonal, but there are always new things to see and new foods to try. Our volunteers will be set up in their usual spot by 10 a.m. and will stay until 3 p.m. They will have lots of beautiful adult dogs and puppies all eager to find their forever home and family. Each one is already spayed or neutered, current on its vaccinations and, of course, micro-chipped. Some of the pets are recent arrivals to our shelter, while others have been waiting patiently for many months for their spot in the adoption lottery. Take a look at them all, especially the shy ones. They are all friendly, loving critters and each one deserves its own special loving home.

My featured pet this week is Babe, a lovely little black Labrador mix with a shiny, coal black coat. She is about 2-years old and has a great, happy-go-lucky disposition. This is a young lady that has lots of love to give and will make an ideal pet for someone looking for a small adult dog. Babe is full of fun and ready to claim your heart. She and her sister, Briana, are the last two un-adopted sisters out of the original litter of four and they have been with us for over a year now. Let’s make sure that 2012 is the year their dreams come true. To meet these cute sisters contact Marlene at maudreyh@aol.com or 210-867-1769 or Sue at susanmarie708@gmail.com or 210-392-8083.

Stephen and Tiffany Lightfoot were more curious than anything else when they walked into a pet adoption center on its first day.

“We’d been talking about getting a dog for some time, but my kids didn’t know I was getting one that day,” Stephen Lightfoot said. “Frankly, I didn’t either.”

But when he played with a 2-year-old collie mix at the city’s new adoption center, in a PetSmart store in far north Fort Worth, he couldn’t resist.

“She just felt like the right temperament for my family,” he said. “She’s been extremely sweet.”

The opening of the city’s second pet adoption center last month has led to a surge in pet adoptions, city officials said.

In the first two weeks of December, the city adopted out 577 pets, a 172 percent increase over the 212 for the same period a year ago.

Buckie was found abandoned in an empty house. Obviously his family had moved and left him there to starve. Luckily, this special guy was rescued by an SPCA PETS SNAP of Montgomery County volunteer, nursed back to health and is now ready to find a new home where he will never be alone again! Despite what happened to him in the past, Buckie is so very people friendly and loyal to his foster family members, especially his foster dad. True to his Border Collie heritage, Buckie has lots of energy and loves to play. His favorite activities include running in the woods, swimming in the lake and riding in the car. Because he is so active, Buckie needs to be in a home where can get plenty of exercise and attention. However, Buckie also enjoys his quiet time and will cuddle with the best of them! His breed is very intelligent too and Buckie is no exception there either. He will learn quickly. Of course, he is already house- and leash-trained, current on all shots, heartworm tested and neutered. Now all Buckie needs to make 2012 the best is to find a family to love. If one of your New Year’s resolutions involves additional love, plus giving a very deserving boy a warm, safe and loving home, then look no further! Buckie is your guy! Please contact SPCA at spca_rescue@yahoo.com and we’ll send you an application to meet Buckie in person. Or better yet, fill out an application online at www.spcaofmc.com. Thank you for considering a rescue pet.

To make the holidays merrier for homeless pets, the City of El Paso Animal Services Program is challenging the community to help find loving homes for shelter animals. The adoption challenge starting today and running through the end of the month aims to save the lives shelter pets. Annually, more than 18,000 animals are euthanized in El Paso as a consequence of unplanned and uncontrolled pet breeding.

Through the adoption challenge, Animal Services hopes to place at least 215 shelter pets in permanent homes. Last year, 208 shelter pets were adopted in the month of December.

“We’re asking the community to join us in this month-long adoption challenge by welcoming a shelter pet into their families this holiday season. Every animal deserves a loving home,” said Environmental Services Director Ellen Smyth, who oversees Animal Services.
