Buckle and his brother, Zipper, were found in a cage outside somewhere last winter. It was so cold, Buckle got frostbite, but he is OK now. He is about 2 years old and is a sweet little guy. He is very outgoing and just loves attention, though he is a bit fearful of men. He would like to be someone’s lap dog, if you would let him. He also gets along well with children and other dogs. Continue reading »]]> An internet-based business is hoping to make an annual tradition of a pet adoption fair.

The company wants to raise money and awareness of organizations that train service dogs for wounded veterans.

“Ma Cares” is an outreach division of MarketAmerica held the adoption fair on Saturday at its headquarters and invited a service dog in training to make an appearance.

Amy Renee is a psychatric service dog in training for her partner and local war hero Sergeant Joseph Smith. Smith was attacked by insurgents on his 4th deployment to Afghanistan. He suffered traumatic brain injury as well as a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Amy Renee is being trained by the Patriot Rovers who are benefitting from the adoption fair.

I am approximately 5 years old. I wandered into a yard the first of May, 2011 weighing only 30 lbs. What no one knew at the time was that I had been poisoned or inadvertently gotten into something toxic. I gave my foster family quite the scare when blood work showed I was in liver failure. However, I rallied and pulled through with a fighting spirit. I now weigh 47 lbs. I am almost completely deaf and my eyesight is quite compromised. We don’t know if I was born that way or if the toxin caused some or all of it. I recently had surgery for a tumor removal – hemangiopericytoma. It was cancer, but not one that metastisizes. Continue reading »]]> Local pet lovers looking to adopt will find puppies and kittens a little bit less expensive this week.

Orange County Animal Services Center has temporarily cut fees to encourage adoptions, and more than 30 pets have found homes since the event started March 23.

Events like this one — which ends April 14 — offer about 50 percent discounts for those seeking new pets, with the cost totaling $50 for cats and $60 for dogs. The shelter holds several per year.

All adoptions include a health examination, initial vaccinations and spaying or neutering.

In the first two months of 2012, the center saw between 30 and 45 percent of its animals adopted — but it also euthanized about 30 percent. Shelter leaders say the reduced-fee event is one method the shelter is using to find pets homes and drive those euthanization rates down.
