The Itty Bitty Kitty Rescue
Animal Rescue Saves all the Kittens In New York City, and is in need of help to find homes

A healthy 3 week old kitten arrived at the ACC, and 45 minutes later was killed for “having no mother”. No adopter or rescuer was given the opportunity to save this kitten.

On Mother’s Day, a mother cat and her two kittens were on the ACC kill list.

That’s when Pets Alive, a NY based No-Kill rescue organization, made the commitment to save all the other kittens still left in NYC – and immediately took 60 kittens and four mother cats from the NYC ACC. The volunteer transporter was instructed to save them ALL.

It is for reasons like this that New York needs a rescue access law like CAARA. CAARA would make it illegal for shelters to kill animals without giving rescues an opportunity to help. Pets Alive is committed to stopping the killing of all animals in the shelter system.

Pets Alive will work feverishly to provide medical care and find loving homes for all of what they are calling the” Itty Bitty Kitty Rescue”. Half of the kitties are at the Middletown NY sanctuary, and half are being cared for at the Elmsford, NY rescue center.

One of the kittens is very seriously ill. Little Mitzee is at risk of going blind. The CACC vets diagnosed her with “conjunctivitis”, but it is far more serious than that. One of Mitzee’s eyes must be removed and the other needs daily care and possible surgery in order to save her vision.

The cost is estimated to be over $5000 and is high risk for a kitten this young. Pets Alive is asking for donations to help not only this little kitten have a chance at life, but to help cover vetting and spaying and neutering for all 64 of these saved lives.

How To Help:

Donations are urgently needed to help provide medical treatment for the itty bitty kitties, including Mitzee, who is currently undergoing treatment to save her vision. To help provide care for them, donations of kitten food, toys and scratching posts are also needed. All of the kittens are in need of loving homes, to learn more about providing foster care or adopting an itty bitty kitty, please visit www.petsalive.org.

About Pets Alive:

As we grow older, companionship becomes more important than ever. This is true not just for humans, but for animals as well.

Cats that end up in shelters have often lost both their human and feline friends. They can become depressed and withdrawn, not unlike people who grieve the loss of dear family and friends.

Cats long for companionship; and are ever so grateful when they find it.

The North Country SPCA in Westport, Essex County, is introducing a new program, Seniors for Seniors, that will help both cats and people find the friendship they crave.

The program is available to adults aged 60 or older who would like to be matched with one of the shelter’s eligible cats, selected by North Country SPCA’s knowledgeable staff. The cats in the program are aged 3 or older; or have been in the shelter more than a year; or are shy or withdrawn in a shelter setting.

The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter on Saturday will waive all pet adoption fees, totaling about $100, in celebration of Mother’s Day.

The event, “Mamma Mia, Pets Are Free-a,” will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shelter, 3320 Beltagh Ave. in Wantagh. All adopted animals will receive free rabies vaccinations and microchipping, as well as free spaying and neutering, town officials said.

“Whether you’re a mom with room in your heart and home for a new pet or you just want to celebrate Mother’s Day with the love of a cuddly companion, now is a great time to adopt,” shelter director Cynthia Iacopella said in a statement.

Interested pet adopters are encouraged to bring treats or toys for the shelter animals — those that do will be eligible for a door prize. There also will be raffles and baked goods for sale, with proceeds benefiting the Tails of Hope Fund, an organization that helps fund medical surgeries for dogs and cats.

Interested adopters can see the shelter’s animals at toh.li/animal-shelter and clicking on the Petfinder link. For more information, call the shelter at 516-785-5220.

According to Donald Bambrick, the animal shelter supervisor, Fig came to the shelter when her owner had to move into a nursing home.

“He’s good with other cats and would do well in a multi-cat home,” Bambrick said.

All animals are licensed, up to date on their vaccinations, micro-chipped and have been spayed or neutered, according to Bambrick.

Adoption fees typically range from $40 to $60 for a cat and from $60 to $125 for a dog.

To adopt Fig or any of the other animals available for adoption, call the shelter at 631-728-7387 or visit them at 102 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays.

This week, the Southampton Animal Shelter is looking to find a home for Hermione, an 11-month-old tortoiseshell cat.

According to Donald Bambrick, the animal shelter supervisor, Hermione was found as a kitten and brought into the shelter in August 2011.

“She can be a little shy but all she needs is the right home to help her open up,” Bambrick said.

All animals are licensed, up to date on their vaccinations, micro-chipped and have been spayed or neutered, according to Bambrick.

Adoption fees typically range from $40 to $60 for a cat and from $60 to $125 for a dog.

To adopt Hermione or any of the other animals available for adoption, call the shelter at 631-728-7387 or visit them at 102 Old Riverhead Road in Hampton Bays.

About this column: Each week, Patch presents an animal that is available for adoption at the Southampton Animal Shelter in Hampton Bays.

“Do not buy the rabbits! Do not buy the chickens!”

Just about this time of year, when baby animals are born and images of fluffy white bunnies mark the onset of Easter, East Hampton resident Pat Lillis gets extra upset.

“I know, ‘they’re sooo cute,”’ Lillis mocked with a strained, high-pitched inflection. “But, who’s going to take care of them?”

If you’ve ever met Lillis, then you know this dialogue, written as it is, does little to capture the full spectrum of her husky, Irish, curse-word-ridden speech. And it does nothing to convey the passion she has for this issue.

Wearing Ugg boots, ripped cargo shorts and a t-shirt with the phrase “Defend human rights today, prevent tragedy tomorrow” — a year-round look for the 61-year-old — Lillis tended to the animals in her home as she railed against a segment of the population she has many issues with: “animal lovers.”

“There’s a reason why these cats are here,” she continued, referring to the posse of felines lounging in her kitchen. “It’s because people ‘fell in love’ with them.”

Twelve years ago, Lillis founded a non-profit organization called Elsa’s Ark, which raises funds to care for injured or abandoned animals. The organization is run out of her home in Springs, and can best be described by a hand-made sign she has hung on a bulletin board in her garage: Only one question allowed, how can I help?

“I had another one, but it fell down and the cats pissed on it,” she explained.

Lillis herself has cared for rabbits and chickens over the years, and is now caring for precisely two dogs, 15 chickens and nearly three-dozen cats, only one of which — Houdini, whom she described as “a thug” — is her own.

Lillis goes through roughly 574 cans of cat food a week. She counted.

It may have been bitter and raining off and on outside on Saturday, but it warm and furry, raining cats and dogs inside the Polish Hall all day Saturday.

“We had to turn people away before we were even open,” said Jamie Berger, communications director for the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, which organized a pet adopt-a-thon on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Polish Hall.

The event featured nine rescue groups from as far as Hempstead. Within the first two hours, 14 animals had been adopted out, though some groups just reserved animals rather than adopting on the spot.

Maria Estrada, who came from Holbrook, came on Saturday in hopes of finding a golden retreiver to take home. Instead, she couldn’t resist Mo, a four-month-old terrier-lab mix. Though she’s not sure about keeping the name.

“He’s active, alert, and friendly,” she said, as she smiled for a picture.

Downtown Riverhead resident Isabelle Gonzalez brought her son, Viktor Paris, to the event also looking for a golden, or possibly a husky. Deterred as well by another loving dog, the two couldn’t resist Penelope, a two-and-a-half-year-old corgie mix.

“This will do,” he said as she jumped up on him. “I love that she’s jumpy and so active.”
