Continue reading »]]> A Hastings dog had a prayer answered shortly after returning from church on Sunday.

A volunteer from Start Over Rover — a no-kill, non-profit animal rescue — brought Marian, a beagle/basset hound mix, to the 35th annual Blessing of the Animals Sunday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral.

Connie Hansen, a board member for Start Over Rover, said Marian was abandoned late at night about a month ago on Marian Road. While Marian is laid-back and likes children, Hansen said she had been waiting for an adoptive family.

Continue reading »]]> We got Sam the Animal Shelter Dog at an adoption fair last fall for half price, because – like his master – he’s an old dog.

Best estimates are that he’s between seven and nine years old, which in “dog years” puts the two of us in the same demographic grouping. (We’ve both got gray hair around our mugs, we’re a little slow getting up from a nap, and our teeth are kind of worn.)

One Lexington business is working extra hard to make sure that each animal that comes to it finds a loving home and is saved from more than just loneliness.

The women of the Lexington Animal Clinic, Cindy Callahan and T.J. Roeder, are working in conjunction with the Nebraska Animal Rescue to help abandoned animals find new homes.

Continue reading »]]> October’s National Pet Adoption Month and the Nebraska Humane Society is offering sale prices on cats and dogs.

Throughout the month, puppies and dogs are half-price Mondays through Thursdays. Adult cats will be “pick your price” so you can decide your own adoption price.

On Wednesday, October 6th, hours are extended to noon to 8 p.m. Dogs and puppies are $50 and adult cats are free.

Continue reading »]]> Just a few blocks away from City Campus, lives are being saved every day. And although the survivors can't speak their thanks, you can see it in their soft eyes and swishing tails, and hear it in their happy meows.

The Cat House, located at 19th and Q Street since 2004, is a no-kill animal shelter devoted to saving cats no matter the cost. More than 175 cats live there, including some whose owners can no longer care for, strays and feral cats, and those too sick to survive on their own.

For Cat House staffers, every feline has a place in the world. No cat is ever turned away, even if it means they’ll live at the shelter for the rest of their life. Pisa, a cat with feline leukemia, has been in the care of the Cat House since 2003.

The non-profit shelter, started in 1998, is the largest no-kill shelter in Nebraska, and has found homes for more than 1,000 cats since its inception. Between April and September of this year, 156 cats were adopted out.

While adoption is the most preferred option, the shelter’s true mission lies in ending euthanasia. And that means providing a quality home for every cat whether it is adopted or not.
