For all you animal lovers, C.A.R.E. Animal Rescue hosted its first ever “Find Your Soulmutt” event at WineStyles (2640 S. Glenstone) Saturday.

This was a 20th anniversary celebration for C.A.R.E., with a pet adoption event modeled after speed dating.

The Valentine’s Day-themed event held free wine and cheese tasting and entertainment.

A C.A.R.E. volunteer held the animals as potential puppy adopters would walk around and meet the furry fellows.

“We figured that if speed dating worked for people, why wouldn’t it work for dogs, too,” says volunteer Susan Venker. “Because getting an animal is, they’re a lifetime companion for people, so it’s very similar to finding your soul mate, so we’re helping people find their soul-mutt this evening.”

Ten percent of the sales went to C.A.R.E.

Continue reading »]]> One of the most basic concepts of economics is that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

On Wednesdays at the Independence Animal Shelter, however, things are a little different: Adult cats are available for adoption at no cost.

And while it certainly isn’t a “free” endeavor – expenses went into preparing the cat for adoption, taking care of it while it was housed at the shelter and the new owner is acquiring those expenses – shelter officials say they are hopeful that “Whisker Wednesdays” will encourage pet adoption in a down economy while helping the shelter work toward its goal of becoming a no-kill facility.

“There are a lot of people out there who can give a good home to an animal but maybe can’t afford the adoption fee,” said Jennifer Polston, Independence Animal Services supervisor.

Whisker Wednesdays applies toward adult cats who are estimated as 1 year or older. The $99 adoption fee is waived, and Polston said she hopes new owners will take that “saved” money and buy a litter box, toys, food and other feline necessities.

Continue reading »]]> Animal welfare advocates were stunned when Jackson County recently defunded an aggressive, five-year effort to spay and neuter dogs and cats belonging to low-income pet owners.

County legislators’ main rationale: At a time of austerity, they were duty-bound to put the needs of people ahead of pets when spending tax dollars.

Yet critics call the move pennywise and pound foolish when the point of the program was to reduce the number of puppies and kittens born to pets belonging to the very people least likely to have their pets fixed without financial help. And where do those unwanted litters wind up but in animal shelters funded by city and county taxpayers?

“It’s a whole lot cheaper for the public to spay and neuter than it is to keep and take care of them,” said Jennifer Polston, supervisor of the Independence Animal Shelter.

Continue reading »]]> UCM DECA’s annual dog adoption fair is this Saturday, Oct. 1 from 8 a.m. -2 p.m. on the courthouse lawn in downtown Warrensburg. Three shelters will have dogs to play with and pictures of other dogs available for adoption.

The dog adoption day starts with a 5K run at 8 a.m. in front of the Union. You may run/walk with your dog or by yourself. The $15 entry fee includes a T-shirt, and proceeds will be donated to the animal shelters.

There are also Kansas City Chiefs tickets available for the San Diego Chargers on Oct. 31 (Monday night) and the Miami Dolphins game on Nov. 6. All seats are located in the Field Level – Sideline Select seating area and are for less than half the face value price.

Continue reading »]]> The City of Kansas City, Mo., Animal Shelter will hold a fall pet adoption special from Saturday, Sept. 24 through Sunday, Oct. 2, at its shelter on 4400 Raytown Road.

The shelter is open Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. However, because of the adoption special, the shelter will extend its hours on Thursday, Sept. 29 and be open 2 to 8 p.m. Also, while the shelter is usually closed on Sundays, it will open to the public on Sunday, Oct. 2 from noon to 3 p.m.

Continue reading »]]> The St. Charles County Parks Department will host its 8th annual Paws in the Park celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Broemmelsiek Park.

This year’s event will be held inside the unique off-leash dog area of the park, which features a large pond for dogs to splash around and play in. Pet lovers from across the region can attend this fun, free off-leash dog-festival packed with contests, prizes, sponsor giveaways and K-9 and obedience skills demonstrations.

“Paws in the Park has grown to be one of our most popular programs of the year,” County Parks Director Bettie Yahn-Kramer said.

She’ll be able to take a costar home.

Courtney Fortner is adopting the part Shih Tzu puppy that portrayed Toto in Spotlight Productions’ version of “Wizard of Oz.”

The 15-year-old girl played Dorothy in the production that closed Saturday at Marquette High School.

“Toto came as a rescue dog from the Open Door Animal Sanctuary and is kind of a mess sometimes, being just a puppy, but I fell in love with her and decided to keep her,” said Courtney, of Manchester, on a recent Friday afternoon before an evening show.

Helping the animals

In her 2010 hit song, Florence and the Machine declared the “dog days are over.” For the new Nodaway Humane Society, it’s beginning at the Nodaway County Fair on Saturday.

Hosting a parade with the theme “Dog Days of Summer,” the humane society hopes to shed light on animals in need of adoption at the animal shelter, located at 829 S. Depot St. in Maryville. The society will be collecting donations during the parade.

Registration for the parade will run from 7 to 9 a.m. on Saturday, with the parade beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Fourth Street at the Northwest Missouri State University campus. The shelter will have an adoption booth at the fair on Saturday, where cats can be adopted for $30 and dogs purchased for $40.
