Continue reading »]]> Scott County Humane Society is one of 54 animal rescue organizations in the country, and the only group in Kentucky to receive grant funding to partner with and participate in the inaugural ASPCA Mega Match-a-thon national pet adoption event.

The humane society will host its Love and Life Adopt-a-thon at Garth Elementary School in Georgetown at South Broadway and Jackson Street.

The event will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. On Friday, the humane society will host a Happy Tail Parade at 6 p.m. on Main Street to kick off the adoption weekend.

Prior to adoption, pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and tested, and receive other veterinary care.

The adopt-a-thon event will also host dog trainers, search and rescue demonstrations, veterinary clinics and pet-related businesses. Each adopted pet will receive a free collar and tag, and adopters will be entered into a raffle for gifts for their new pets.

Continue reading »]]> PetSmart Charities and the Lexington Humane Society will unveil a new pet adoption center at 10 a.m. Saturday in the PetSmart store at 1945 Pavilion Way.

For the past year, the Humane Society has had a small space in a corner of the store where animals could be adopted. This will be the seventh, free-standing adoption center constructed by PetSmart Charities in the United States, said Madison Carey, director of development for the Lexington Humane Society.

The center will be staffed seven days a week by a Society adoption specialist.

All animals up for adoption have been spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on all their shots.

Continue reading »]]> Metro Animal Services is offering a special rate for adopting dogs on Tuesday, even has it copes with animals that contracted distemper.

One dog at MAS’s Manslick Road facility died last week, and two others contracted the disease. MAS says it has “thoroughly” cleaned its facility and that no other animals have come down with distemper.

Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., the facility at 3705 Manslick Road will allow dogs to be adopted for $9. You can contact the facility at 361-1318.

Continue reading »]]> June is Adopt-A-Shelter Cat month and the Kentucky Humane Society is helping people find their purr-fect match.

KHS will waive the adoption fee on any cat 1-year or older with the donation of a much-needed item such as bleach, cat litter, pet toys and multi-packs of paper towels.

Cats are available at all nine area adoption locations: KHS Main Campus, KHS East Campus and seven Feeders Supply stores around the state.

Summer is typically known as kitten season because of the influx of kittens into the shelters. With kittens taking the spotlight, adult cats are often forgotten, shelter officials said. Adopt-A-Shelter Cat month gives older cats a chance to shine and find a permanent home faster.

Nine-year-old Celia Dutton lives in Floyds Knobs, Ind., with her parents and two brothers, where she helps take care of the family’s horses and reads four books a week.

Butterfield and Celia have never met — and probably never will — but they have one thing in common: Mickey, a 60-pound, black-and-white pointer mix who has, in different and separate ways, rescued both of them — Butterfield from the dreary isolation of prison and Celia from her nightly anxiety about seizures.

Jefferson Animal Hospital East will offer discounted veterinary care to dogs and cats adopted through the Pets for Patriots program.

Continue reading »]]> Although nearly a year overdue because of construction problems, a new $2.6 million pet-adoption center near Newburg was hailed Friday as marking a new day in the promotion and protection of animals in Jefferson County.

The new center at 3516 Newburg Road, just a minute or two off the Watterson Expressway, will provide suitable space to showcase adoptable animals, officials said.
