The staff at Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter understand what an important decision it is to add a new pet to your family. Your lifestyle, pet ownership experience, kids and current pets, are all things to take into consideration when adding a new furry family member. Few people have time to do as much research on available animals as they would like and often find it inconvenient to visit different facilities during their limited public hours.Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter wants to help ensure that every pet adoption is a fur-ever, loving home for our homeless cats and dogs. That’s why we’ve expanded our “Special Companions” program. For a $35.00 donation, our staff will assist you in determining the best pet for your household and help locate it for you. We’ll discuss your wants and wishes along with all the other details that make an adoption successful.Siamese, Snowshoe, Poodle or puppy, our partner shelters have many purebred and mixed breed animals that the average adopter does not know about and cannot locate. Or, they spend hours looking for animals that once found, do not meet their needs. We’ll work with our Shelter partners throughout New Jersey and the United States to locate adoptable animals that meet what is important to you and to successful pet ownership. Once an animal that we feel you would love, has been located and brought to our Shelter, you will be notified of the time that animal will first become available and be able to meet with that pet prior to it becoming available to the general public.

For the past year, the Humane Society has had a small space in a corner of the store where animals could be adopted. This will be the seventh, free-standing adoption center constructed by PetSmart Charities in the United States, said Madison Carey, director of development for the Lexington Humane Society.

The center will be staffed seven days a week by a Society adoption specialist.

All animals up for adoption have been spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on all their shots.

June is Adopt-A-Shelter Cat month and the Kentucky Humane Society is helping people find their purr-fect match.

KHS will waive the adoption fee on any cat 1-year or older with the donation of a much-needed item such as bleach, cat litter, pet toys and multi-packs of paper towels.

Cats are available at all nine area adoption locations: KHS Main Campus, KHS East Campus and seven Feeders Supply stores around the state.

Summer is typically known as kitten season because of the influx of kittens into the shelters. With kittens taking the spotlight, adult cats are often forgotten, shelter officials said. Adopt-A-Shelter Cat month gives older cats a chance to shine and find a permanent home faster.

His arms covered with faded tattoos, his neck tomato red from the prison yard sun, Robert Butterfield’s home is cell No. 226 of the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in La Grange, where he’s doing 13 years for robbery and stealing drugs.

Nine-year-old Celia Dutton lives in Floyds Knobs, Ind., with her parents and two brothers, where she helps take care of the family’s horses and reads four books a week.

Butterfield and Celia have never met — and probably never will — but they have one thing in common: Mickey, a 60-pound, black-and-white pointer mix who has, in different and separate ways, rescued both of them — Butterfield from the dreary isolation of prison and Celia from her nightly anxiety about seizures.

Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects shelter pets with U.S. veterans, wounded warriors and service members, is joining forces with the Kentucky Humane Society to increase the adoption of adult and other at-risk shelter animals. Jefferson Animal Hospital East will offer discounted veterinary care to dogs and cats adopted through the Pets for Patriots program.

“Kentucky Humane Society is proud to join the Pets for Patriots program,” says Lori Kane Redmon, KHS President and CEO. “We are honored to help veterans in our community find a lifelong friend.”

Notes Redmon, KHS provides shelter, foster care and adoptions to over 6,000 dogs and cats each year. “We strive every day to find loving homes for the deserving animals in our care, and the focus of this program will give many of them a second chance at a great life. This partnership is an excellent way to bring awareness to our mission and say “thank you” to those who served our country. Our men and women returning from service need the unconditional friendship and love these animals will provide.”
