Continue reading »]]> At the end of fall, the Cedar Valley Humane Society took-in more than 200 cats. That’s twice their normal volume due to the feral cat season. Now, the shelter has about 100 cats left because of numerous adoption programs to find the animals their forever homes.

“She just filled an empty void that I had,” said senior Mark Rundall who participated in the Cat Companions for Seniors program.

For 58 year old Mark Rundall, having three month old Precious means a new license on life.

“I don’t have to be lonely. It was very hard from me to live alone,” said Rundall.

Now the duo has one another; Rundall a companion and Precious a forever home safe from being euthanized.

“By placing a pet with them, it brings them out of their shell and makes them happier,” said Cedar Valley Humane Society Executive Director Bob Citrullo.

Cedar Valley Humane Society Executive Director Bob Citrullo says they’ve got plenty of cats up for adoption. At one point, some 217 of them scattered around the building after the spring and summer breeding season.

Continue reading »]]> Cedar Rapids Animal Care & Control is celebrating their October pet adoption special, “Study Buddies”. “Imagine how wonderful it would be to spend your study time cuddled up with a new pet totally devoted and grateful to you for giving him/her a second chance for a new life,” said Diane Webber, Program Manager for the animal shelter. “It’s a bond that you’ll cherish for a lifetime, and one that actually has health benefits for both you and your pet, like reducing stress.”

“Study Buddies” adoptions are limited to the first 2 weeks of October. Shelter hours are Monday through Friday from 12-5 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm. Only pets already altered and waiting for adoption will be available at the special rate of $25 for cats and $50 for dogs.

Continue reading »]]> Would you like to bring home a black furry and snuggly kitten or puppy? The Noah’s Ark Animal Foundation in Fairfield, Iowa may have one waiting for you.

The animal shelter is participating in the Best Friends Animal Society’s national “Back in Black” pet adoption promotion, an effort to get black dogs and cat adopted.

“Alot of times in shelter situations, black cats and dogs are overlooked and we don’t know why whether it’s the stigma of a black cat is not a good luck charm or the black dogs, sometimes most of them are big black labs and people just absolutely overlook the black animal, which is unfortunate,” said Dawn Safrit, the Excutive Director of Noah’s Ark Animal Foundation.

From Aug.15 -Sept. 17, black dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at the shelter are ready to take home for half the price of the adoption fee, which ranges from $65-$90.

Almost Home Humane Society of North Central Iowa is holding Woofstock, an outdoor concert event, on Saturday.

“I think it’s going to rock,” said Tammy Grove, community relations manager for Almost Home.

Bands scheduled to appear are Orfin, Little Fiddler Band, Riley Bird and the Dirty Kids, and Brutal Republic. The bands are a mix of rock and alternative, with some blues folk, Grove said.

All of the bands are donating their talents to the event to help the shelter’s cause and raise money for the animals, she said. “It’s really nice to know that regardless of what type of event we’re having, there are so many people willing to do anything they can do help us.”

Continue reading »]]> The cat adoption room at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center, with it’s scratching posts, mini hammocks and dozens of toys, may look like a feline paradise, but Kim Laczynski, program director at the center, says that’s not always the case, especially when the room becomes crowded.

During the summer, the center’s busiest time of year, the room gets plenty full, employees said.

That’s why the center is reaching out to local residents to consider serving as foster families for cats and kittens waiting for adoption.

Continue reading »]]> The Animal Rescue of Carroll is waiving cat adoption fees this month to celebrate Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. In Carroll nearly 150 cats are abandoned and left homeless each year and in collaboration with the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the makers of Fresh Step Litter the ARC is participating in a fee-waived adoption program to help find loving homes for cats. ASPCA research found that waiving fees for adult cats boosts adoptions without diminishing the value adopters place on their cats and fee-waived adoptions decrease shelter costs by reducing the average length of stay for adult cats, and also could increase donations due to an increase in adopters.

Continue reading »]]> When Rinthea Satterlee’s dog, Barkley, died from kidney failure, the Williamsburg woman wanted to honor his memory in some way. A year later, the Barkley Foundation has helped dozens of special-needs dogs and cats from across the Midwest find new homes. Satterlee and a group of volunteers from the new animal rescue operation, which began in January, held an adoption event and bake sale Saturday at Iowa City pet store Leash on Life.“ I knew when he passed away I had to help special needs animals,” Satterlee said of Barkley, the Saint Bernard mix who died at age 8. It was the first fundraiser for the organization, and the volunteers had more than a dozen dogs on hand. By the end of the day, five had new homes.

Continue reading »]]> There is a reduced adoption fee of $95 through March for 16 cats designated as “Shelter Stars” at the Humane Society of North Iowa.

That covers spay or neuter surgery, required vaccinations, and other necessary veterinarian care.

Shelter Stars was launched last fall to highlight dogs that have lived in the shelter for longer than they deserve or have been overlooked, HSNI Executive Director Sybil Soukup said.

The canine version was such a success, Shelter Stars was expanded to include felines, she said.

Continue reading »]]> The last week has been busy at the Pottawattamie County Animal Shelter. Three dogs came in to the shelter along with seven black puppies about 5 weeks old.

The puppies had been put in a cardboard box and abandoned on the side of Highway 92 on an evening that was extremely cold. A passerby saw the box, discovered the puppies and took the time to bring them to the shelter, most likely saving these puppies’ lives.

To the person or people who left the puppies in that box, why? How could you be so heartless?

If people don’t want puppies, spay or neuter your dog. If you don’t and your dog has puppies and you do not want them or can’t provide for them, please take them to a shelter. Why should innocent creatures suffer because of irresponsible pet owners? Most of the puppies have found homes thanks to the dedication and hard work of staff and volunteers.

Please think long and hard before getting any pet. It takes dedication, love and patience to give a dog the home it needs and deserves. Most dogs live at least 10 years, so people need to think about the future to make sure it includes taking your pet wherever life takes you.

Continue reading »]]> Heidi Drager, director of Marshalltown’s Animal Rescue League, had a problem.

According to her, the Lennox L Series combination air conditioner/furnace unit, which provides heat to the facility’s dog adoption area, was not working reliably.

She explained.

“On a regular basis ARL employees would arrive in the morning and discover the furnace had ‘tripped out’ or stopped during the night, leaving the dog adoption area at 45 degrees,” she said.

Drager called Alan Anselman, general manager of Marshalltown’s Lennox Industries manufacturing plant and explained the problem.
