Both organizations’ animal shelters are offering free vaccinations for the life for any adult cat (one year of age or older) adopted from either location between Sept. 1 and Feb. 28, 2011. Each qualifying cat will be entitled to one free annual rabies and distemper shot from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s Wellness Clinic.

Nationally, cat adoptions tend to lag far behind those of dogs. The goal of the new Free Shots for Life program is to increase cat adoptions in Hillsborough by at least 10 percent.

Lee County Domestic Animal Services (LCDAS) kicks off a month long adoption promotion beginning September 1st. The Back to School Pet Adoption Special, offers adopters a $25 discount off the regular adoption fee when they donate 10 lbs. of unopened cat food to help re-stock the agency’s Community Pet Pantry.

LCDAS hopes the promotion will solve two problems the shelter is currently experiencing, a critically low supply of cat food and a lack of good homes for adoptable pets. The Pantry currently feeds more than 1,000 dogs and cats every month whose owners are receiving public assistance and cannot afford pet food and supplies. Cat food is typically not donated as often as dog food so supplies deplete more quickly.

Puppy Hill Farm, which has been rescuing pets from animal shelters for 11 years, will open a new adoption center Saturday near Keystone Heights. The center is housed in a recently renovated building halfway between Melrose and Keystone Heights. Sasha is a spayed female ~2-3 years old. Long story short, her original owner (my aunt) is indisposed for a while, so my parents took in her cat, dog and son. But miss Sasha, sweet as she is on her own, does not particularly get along with other cats (my parents have 5, I have 2). We’ve both tried, and it’s just not working. My next stop is the SPCA, where I hope she will be adopted.

LCAS is putting a call out to the community asking for donations of dry and wet cat food, and cat litter.

Through its Pet Pantry, LCAS distributes pet food and supplies to owners that would need to surrender their pets due to their inability to provide food and care.

Currently, LCAS is providing food for more than 800 pets, and also helping several neighborhoods and churches supply pet food for their members and residents’ pets.
