Continue reading »]]> Dog trainer Chris Perondi’s career with canines started with the proverbial doggie in the window.

As a child, Perondi got a dog from a pet store; a few years later, the dog became sick and the family learned the dog’s liver had not developed right because of bad breeding practices. It was then that Perondi said he knew he would never buy another dog again, and that adopting was the way to go.

At age 20, Perondi adopted a border collie/cattle dog he named Pepper. On a whim, he began teaching Pepper tricks and even started a Frisbee club for dogs and their owners.

Eventually, Perondi began competing with Pepper, now retired at 16, at Frisbee catching competitions, even winning the National Frisbee Championships. Perondi began getting requests to do stunt dog demonstrations, which eventually turned into an actual show.

Continue reading »]]> The Dumb Friends league has reported that they are seeing a tremendous amount of support over the past few months, trying to place adult cats in loving homes. Unfortunately, they are still seeing way too many cats in their care. To help fight this growing problem, they have extended their cat adoption special through the end of February. They have recently posted the following press release.

Waived cat fees extended through February

DENVER (Jan. 2, 2012) The League is extending its waived adoption fee for cats 1 year and older through Feb. 29. The special is taking place at both shelter locations—the Quebec Street shelter in Denver and the Buddy Center in Castle Rock—as well as the adoption center in Northfield-Stapleton and on its mobile adoption unit, the Pet Care-avan.

Continue reading »]]> Pooch Party in the Park is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in London Bridge Beach Park on the Island.

Organizers said Monday dog owners and non-dog owners both are invited to the free-admission event because, well, it’s just fun.

“We want everybody to come,” said Pooch Party organizer Maureen Sieker. “We don’t care if you have a dog or don’t have a dog, we want everyone to come down and enjoy the fun. If they don’t come they are missing a really great time. They just won’t believe some of the things that these dogs can do.”

Continue reading »]]> The Aurora Animal Shelter is making a push to get cats and kittens adopted with a deal on adoption costs and fees for spay and neutering procedures.

Until Oct. 31, the shelter will take half off the cost of a customer’s first cat adoption and spay or neuter surgery. What’s more, customers can adopt and spay or neuter a second kitten or cat for free.

The shelter currently has about 30 adoptable cats and kittens, according to spokeswoman Cheryl Conway. The high numbers for the shelter stem from a variety of factors, including a warm year and a rough economy.

Continue reading »]]> Muttsavers Rescue, Inc. and PetCo this weekend are uniting forces to hold a pet adoption event at PetCo in Broomfield. It is a special event, tied to others like it across the country, but a common occurrence at the local store.

MuttSavers Rescue is a Broomfield-based nonprofit dedicated to the rescue of young dogs from overcrowded and under-funded shelters. Each week, volunteers for MuttSavers Rescue collect puppies from shelters lacking the resources to properly care for them, and distribute them within its diverse network of foster caregivers.

Foster caregivers choose the dog, or dogs, they would like to care for, and MuttSavers provides the necessary resources — food, crates, collars, leashes, even medical care — for a healthy and loving environment. The foster family is then expected to provide a stable and consistent setting for the dog until it has been socialized and is ready to find a permanent home.

Fosters families house train, teach basic obedience commands and update MuttSavers regarding any issues surrounding dogs’ health or personality.

While this fun annual event will once again be held in the 1500 block of Old South Pearl St. during the weekly Farmers Market, the date was moved from its previous early summertime slot in hopes of providing more temperate weather for the dogs and cats seeking new homes.

Fair-goers will be able to find information on different breeds, receive adoption advice, view demonstrations, gather free pet product samples or simply meander the block viewing dozens of wonderful potential new housemates for you and your family.

Britta Fuller of Fort Collins said she had a good idea she’d be adopting Cricket, a brown-tiger-colored, domestic shorthaired female kitten after seeing her on the Internet. And their first encounter at the event sealed the deal.

“She picked me,” Fuller said. “She was just crawling all over me, purring and super happy.”

Continue reading »]]> As many as 1,300 dogs and cats in Westminster, Colo. will be saved every year, thanks to a partnership between Humane Society of Boulder Valley (HSBV) and nonprofit PetSmart Charities, Inc. The two have teamed up with support from PetSmart, Inc. to open a pet adoption center inside the PetSmart(R) store in Westminster, Colo.

PetSmart Charities is funding 100 percent of the build-out costs for the new center, which will occupy about 2,000 square feet of space that is being converted inside the store. The PetSmart store is not charging the Humane Society of Boulder Valley any rent.

Through December 31, Adopters can get $100 off the adoption of any adult cat or dog, as well as 50 percent off the adoption fee for any kitten or puppy.

This Holiday Adoption Special takes place at both shelter locations–the 2080 South Quebec Street location in Denver and the Buddy Center location at 4556 Castleton Court in Castle Rock.
