Continue reading »]]> Many orphaned pets found their lifelong homes this weekend following the Spring Pet Adoption Faire in Memorial Park.

The event, which was organized by Upland Animal Services, resulted in the adoptions of dogs and cats from shelters and rescue groups throughout the region.

Saturday was the first time that Upland Animal Services hosted the event.

“I thought it went great,” said Jon Knowlton, Upland’s animal services supervisor. “Everybody was fantastic. The volunteers did a great job of helping everybody, and the vendors were fantastic. I thought it went really well.”

More than 50 animals were adopted during the event, Knowlton said.

The Upland shelter found homes for 14 animals, including five cats.

The Riverside County shelter found homes for 18 dogs, and the San Bernardino County shelter placed 11 in homes, he said.

The Upland shelter invited 14 other shelters to participate, including San Bernardino and Riverside counties as well as San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga and Baldwin Park.

Several rescue groups in the region attended, including Priceless Pets, Grey Save, All Breed Dog, Best Friends Animal Society, Pardon Me Inc. and Cat Love.

Low-cost vaccines and $6 rabies vaccines were available for pets as well as free microchipping for pets of Upland residents.

Keep Me Wild brought baby bobcats while the California Turtle and Tortoise Club brought tortoises.

Continue reading »]]> Animal lovers and those looking for a new member to add to their families should be ready for May 26th when Bill Jacobs Kia/Subaru will be hosting the Save-A-Pet Adoption Event at the dealership. The Will County Humane Society will be at the dealership from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and will have dogs and cats available for adoption. The animals will be transported in the dealership’s very own Subaru vehicles to the store where people can stop by and take them home for good. All adoptions include all shots, spaying or neutering and the installation of a micro-chip for the animal. For a low fee of just $100 for cats and $175 for dogs, customers can take home a new special member of their family.

In addition to the event, the dealership is also hosting a drop-off event from now until May 26th for donations for the Will County Humane Society. This could include pet supplies, pet food, toys, treats or financial donations. Everything is greatly appreciated and all of it goes for a great cause.

The Will County Humane Society is the oldest and the original no-kill shelter in Will County. It is located in Shorewood, Illinois and has served the area for over 40 years. The mission of the shelter is to provide a safe haven for homeless pets and help them find their forever home. There are over 40 homeless dogs and nearly 100 cats at the shelter. Poor Louise came to Paw Parent as a boarder with her friend Selma.  Unfortunately her guardian never came back to get her.  Now she is waiting to find a new home, hopefully one where she can be with her friend Selma.  The two of them are very bonded.

Louise is about 12 years old and very large, she must weigh about 20 pounds.  She is very calm and quiet and just loves to watch the world go by.  She would do best in a quiet home with a loving and calm person who can give her the love and attention she needs.

She is spayed and up to date with all her shots.

Continue reading »]]> In honor of older Americans month, the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) will participate in a month long adoption promotion aimed towards senior citizens and senior pets. The promotion, Super Senior May: Never Too Old to Play, began May 1 and will run through May 31.

DACC will sponsor two different promotions during the month of May. The first is intended to honor and celebrate senior citizens. To encourage community seniors to adopt, DACC will waive the adoption fee for senior citizens (60+ years, with proper identification) throughout the month.

To encourage the adoption of senior pets, DACC will also discount the adoption fee for senior pets (animals 5 years+). Senior animals make wonderful companion pets and are the prime choice for individuals who do not want the responsibility of training and raising a puppy.

Senior pets are also usually more adaptable and integrate well into a new environment. They are often house trained, have good manners and have picked up basic lessons and commands since most of them have lived with a family.

Super Senior May: Never Too Old to Play is sponsored by the Los Angeles Animal Alliance (www.laanimalalliance.org). The promotion is valid at all County of Los Angeles Animal Care Centers, as well as other local animal care agencies throughout Southern California.

Continue reading »]]> Lake County Animal Care and Control is holding its inaugural pet adoption event beginning Saturday, May 5, and running through Friday, May 11.

If you’ve been looking to add a pet to your home, now is a good time – during the weeklong event, the county will waive the $20 adoption fee for cats and the $30 fee for dogs in order to aid in finding homes for the animals in the shelter, located at 4949 Helbush Drive, Lakeport.

Earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors approved updates to the county policy and procedure manual allowing for an animal adoption amnesty program in which the county adoption fees were waived in adoption events held up to four times a year.

Thanks to the introduction in March of the shelter’s new spay and neuter clinic, spay and neuter costs also have been reduced, and the adoption process – which requires that adopted animals be altered before going to their new homes – has become more streamlined, according to shelter officials.

Now, many of the animals offered are already spayed or neutered and ready to go to new homes immediately.

Thanks to the waiving of the county fees, this week female cats’ adoption costs total $86, which includes $65 for spaying, $15 for microchip and $6 for rabies vaccine. For male cats, it’s $76, including the $55 neuter fee, plus the same microchip and rabies vaccination costs.

For dogs, smaller females can be adopted for $126, which covers the $90 spay fee, $15 for microchip, $6 for rabies, $5 for heartworm and $10 for the license. Larger female dogs cost $105 to spay, and all other charges are the same for a total cost to the adopter of $141. Male dogs cost $116 to adopt.

The shelter will be open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special Sunday hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. have been added in order to facilitate weekend visitors.

Lake County Animal Care and Control’s regular weekly hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The kennel is open at 10:30 a.m., so visitors who want to adopt an animal should come at that point or after.

Continue reading »]]> Los Angeles County animal shelters are offering discounted adoption fees for all pets five years or older in May as part of a program called “Super Seniors.”

The closest shelter to Altadena is Baldwin Park, which is the facility that stray or lost animals from Altadena are brought to if reported to the county.

The purpose of the promotion is to encourage residents to adopt older pets who often have a harder time finding a home than young animals.

Continue reading »]]> PAWS of Coronado has officially launched the Senior to Senior Cat Adoption Program! PAWS of Coronado and the Coronado Animal Care Facility (ACF) are the temporary home of many “Baby Boomer” cats who for a variety of reasons have lost their homes and their human companions.

These cats still have a lot of living to do and loving to give. Our senior cats are particularly affectionate and easy going and would make great pet companions.

The Senior to Senior Cat Adoption Program is when cats over ten years old are adopted by a human 55+ years old. The fees are $35.00 for the first senior cat adopted and $15.00 for a second senior cat adopted to the same person.

Continue reading »]]> Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center (MSRPAC) has named Betsy Sharp of Riverside the organization’s volunteer of the year. Executive Director Denise Perry and Volunteer Services Manager Jackie Lamirande presented the 2012 Friend of the Animals Award to Sharp on April 22 at the annual volunteer recognition party.

“Betsy is an integral part of our team of volunteers,” Lamirande said. “She is always willing to lend a hand whether it’s assisting in the cattery or helping to mentor the new volunteers. She is what volunteering is all about. We are fortunate and proud to have her as one of our valued volunteers.”

Retired from Riverside County Public Administrator/Coroner’s Office, Sharp spends three days a week at MSRPAC where she has been a volunteer since 2008. Working mainly with the center’s feline residents, she is a cat socializer and whisperer and a mentor of volunteers entering the cat socialization program. Additionally, she prepares pet food in MSRPAC’s Chuck Waggin’ Pet Meals program which is delivered to homebound cat and dog owners through Meals on Wheels.

Sharp’s volunteerism at the center also has included conducting humane education tours for school groups and participating in the center’s new-member drive.

Asked why she chose to volunteer at MSRPAC, Sharp replied, “I love being around animals and always wanted to work with them. When I retired and was looking for such an opportunity, I learned of the volunteer program at the Pet Adoption Center and knew that was the place for me.”

The 36-year-old Spanish entertainer visited the Westside German Shepherd Rescue to possibly adopt a new furry friend. He was spotted carrying a dog cage out of the rescue center later in the day!

Enrique is set to make an appearance on the Today Show Toyota Summer Concert Series. You can catch his performance on Friday (July 16).
